This year, 15 remarkable people are running the London Marathon for Oasis. In this series, we’re sharing short interviews with some of them about why they’ve chosen to take on the challenge in support of our work.
Tell us a little about yourself
I am Claire Johnson and have been working for Oasis as East Southampton Hub Team Leader since Sept 2024.
Why are you running the London Marathon for Oasis?
After getting my 9th rejection in the London Marathon ballot running for Oasis is a dream come true. As Hub Team Leader I see day in day out the difference Oasis Youth & Community work makes. It is a privilege to be representing our Youth & Community teams and raising as much money as I can to see our vital work continue to reach as many as possible.
What’s your premarathon breakfast?
Toasted bagels with jam
What’s your strangest running habit, superstition or training hack?
I have an alternative use for a buff (normally worn round your neck) – I use it to prevent under bra band chafing.
What’s the hardest part of marathon training for you?
I am a social runner and enjoy running with other people. This keeps my pace steady and makes the time go quicker. Long runs on my own are therefore the hardest part.
What keeps you going on the days you really don’t want to run?
Thinking about some of the young people and families I work with and the challenges they face on a day-to-day basis, which puts my lack of motivation to run into perspective and reminds me why I am doing it.
What’s one thing you wish supporters knew about marathon training?
Either – The life of one pair of trainers is less than the mileage of a standard marathon training plan. Or – You get chafing in places you didn’t even know existed.
What’s on your running playlist?
My favourite worship songs – with number 1 currently being Holy Forever (Chris Tomlin).
